Visitor center volunteers greet and assist those who stop by ATC headquarters, which serves as the national office for the Appalachian Trail and one of the significant landmark along the entire trail from Georgia to Maine. Visitors range from international tourists who have never set foot on the A.T. to day-hikers to thru-hikers.

On weekends, volunteers welcome and orient visitors and hikers, direct people to the Appalachian Trail and other points of interest around Harpers Ferry, and recommend local day-hikes. Volunteers also ring up sales, and occasionally take snapshots of hikers for our photo album. A passion for the Appalachian Trail, a love of hiking, and and an interest in meeting people are attricutes that make a good fit for this volunteer position; a customer service background is also helpful.

On weekdays, when ATC has fewer visitors, volunteers are also asked to assist with administrative duties. Office skills and knowledge of a broad cross-section of the A.T. are generally recommended.

Visitor center volunteers ideally assist one day a week, and no less than two days a month.

Prospective volunteers are asked to fill out our ATC Headquarters volunteer application, which can be found in the "documents" tab.

A more detailed volunteer position description under the "documents" tab also explains responsibilities in more depth.
